What is the lifespan of LEDs?Many manufacturers claim that their LEDs will last you 100,000 hours or even longer before operating at half brightness. But how valid is this claim? Quite simply, the LED industry is not yet old enough to validate this figure. LED manufacturers perform numerous accelerated degradation tests, during which they both over heat and overdrive the LEDs until they expire. From these results, they then extrapolate the figures to find the expected life span under normal conditions. From these tests, many manufacturers concluded the 100,000 hour figure. There are also many LED manufacturers who give an expected lifespan of anywhere from 60,000 to 80,000 hours. A major factor in the longevity of LEDs is in the way that they are used - in the output. Different colours consume various amounts of energy, thus changing their total lifespan. Furthermore, the expected lifespan also assumes that the LEDs are operating at full brightness, which, depending on the application, may or may not be true. We can see from the above that there is really no way to exactly confirm the LED lifespan of 100,000 hours. In reality, they may last much longer than this, or perhaps expire earlier. In any case, their lifespan is far longer than any other lighting technology currently available. We have designed all Coolon Lighting LED products to be under driven, ensuring that you will get maximum lifespan out of your products. Go To the TopQ: How can I calculate the length of optical fibre I require? We have created a slide show that will help you calculate how much optical fibre you will need for your project, which you can download here (PPS file, 107KB). If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Go To the TopQ: What makes Emblazon Powerline Communication technology so unique?Traditionally, for a controlled network of lights, you would require two or more sets of cables; one for power, and the other for data communication. Our proprietary Emblazon Powerline Communication sends data signals through the power cable, enabling it to be installed within existing infrastructure. This is a huge benefit, providing possibilities for controlled LED lighting where there previously was none. Go To the TopQ: Can Coolon Lighting LED products be powered by batteries, or solar panels?Even though LEDs are far more efficient than other light sources, all of our products are designed to be bright and therefore they consume quite a bit of power. Depending on the product and usage, the size of the battery or solar panel required may be impractical, or simply not cost effective. Our products are designed to give the best light, at the highest quality. Using limited power sources such as batteries, or solar panels, could potentially compromise the integrity of the product, by limiting the light output and lifespan. However, we have experience in solar and battery powered design, so if you are aware of the limitations but feel that this is right for you, please do not hesitate to contact us. Go To the TopQ: What is an IP Rating?IP (Ingress Protection) Rating for Equipment and Enclosures: A two-digit number (as specified in Australian Standards AS60529 and EN60529) is used to provide an IP Rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclosure for electronic equipment. The two digits represent three different forms of environmental influence:
The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection from that influence. As an example, a product rated as IP57 would be better protected against environmental factors than another similar product that was only rated as IP43. Our Gel Connectors are rated at IP67 (totally protected against dust ingress and withstands immersion up to a depth of 1 metre). Go To the TopQ: Do you make LED torches?LED torches are manufactured by the millions in Asia, and are readily available at most hardware or discount stores. Whilst we are able to design and manufacture LED products such as torches, we could not be financially competitive in this market, therefore, we choose to specialize in unique products where superior quality is paramount. Go To the TopQ: I have a new product that requires the design of an electronic element, can you help?Whilst we believe that we have the worlds smartest and most talented people working for Coolon Lighting, we do accept that every now and then, someone may have a great product that needs the expert input of an electronics designer, or the assistance of a local electronic manufacturer. Contact us here to discuss your company's needs, and we will do our very best to help bring your ideas to fruition. Go To the TopQ: What else does the ELS Crayon Lamp do?It gets up early to cook you breakfast, rubs your feet after a long day's work and comments periodically on how good you look.* (*Disclaimer: this is, of course, completely untrue. Obviously, this is a lamp, and as such, its primary and sole purpose is to give beautiful, breathtaking, colour changing light) Go To the TopQ: Does Coolon Lighting only work on architectural developments, or do you help with smaller projects as well?We specialize in architectural lighting solutions; however, we are always happy to assist anyone who shares our passion and vision for LEDs. Go To the TopQ: How does colour affect me?Chromotherapy, sometimes called colour therapy or colourology, is an alternative medicine method. It is claimed that a therapist trained in chromotherapy can use colour and light to balance energy wherever our bodies are lacking, be it physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental. Read more about this fascinating therapy here (PDF file, 123KB). Go To the TopQ: How many Coolon engineers does it take to change an LED light bulb?None… for 16 years! Go To the Top |
