Comparison of LED's and HID light sources in Mining Sites

Find out why you should replace your traditional HID light sources with Coolon LED Lights

The average rated life of a 250w MH lamp is 10,000 hrs at 10 hour switching cycles. This means that the that the lamp is basically able to be switched approx 1000 times on average before it fails, however that is in a test bed situation where all the factors in the lamp circuit are perfect, (No Voltage variation, no vibration etc) in a working environment the lamp life will be diminished greatly (by up to 40% on average).

Coolon's LED lights are not susceptable to damage from switching cycles, have far greater ability to widthstand vibrations and also feature advanced thermal management to provide a rated life of 50,000 hours.

Lumen depreciation of the MH lamp, as well as optical and ballast losses, reduces output of the HID system. The MH lamp will also require 8.6 re-lamps over 50,000 hours. Coolon LED Lights do not require this, therefore there is a much greater Average Delivered lumens per watt compared to HID Light sources.

HID light sources are an omni directional light source that requires reflectors to direct the light onto the required work surface, in doing this there is a substantial loss of light that is generated by the lamp. The light that exits the fixture is called the Light Output Ratio, in standard fixtures this is somewhere around 60% or 0.6.

LED's have a Light Output Ratio of around 97% or 0.97 as the light generated by an LED is all forward facing making the fittings more efficient.

Unlike traditional HID lamps which require relamping every 3-6 months, Coolon LED Lights can run continuously for 50,000 hours, therefore reducing maintenance costs and site shutdown times dramatically.

Existing HID light sources based on information gathered from electricians in the mining industry. Taking into account lamp cost, authority to work, job hazard analysis, notification of works, works order, travel time to site and actual labour, it has been determined that the cost of relamping HID fixtures is $295.

Today's commercially available LEDs offer a very high colour rendering index (typical CRI of between 75 – 80), enabling excellent colour differentiation. Emitted light spectrum provides natural and familiar colours as seen during the day. This sets a very high standard for most commonly used industrial luminaires.
